Appraisal

The Appraisal has get from Dr. Darragh Elliot through his own art appraisal company, Maynard Elliot Inc.
Maynard Elliott Inc. (USA) and Maynard Elliott Limited (Canada) are the first and presently the only fully on-line art appraisal companies on the Internet. They are fully independent firms and are not affiliated with any art gallery, or auction gallery such as Christies, Sotheby's or any other "for profit" gallery (http://fineartappraiser.com/).

They are specialist in the appraisal of American art, Eskimo / Inuit art, Canadian art, and European art. The appraisals are not limited to paintings from the various era countries; it also appraises prints, sculptures and art object from other eras and countries.
“In December 2005, I had the privilege of appraising the painting titled ‘The Crocus Flowers’ by the artist known as Vincent Van Gogh. Because the painting had no previously known title, this was set by myself. This was an undiscovered original work of art, believed to have been painted by the artist in the late 19th century.” said Dr. Elliot in his email to appraise the painting.

Dr. Darragh Elliot also adds, “In my opinion, the painting was acquired in the 19th century, initially as a decorative item of inconsequential value at the time, as the artist was relatively unknown, and whose works at that time had no substantive value. Consequently, the painting having remained in private hands since its initial acquisition, does not appear in any subsequently known catalog raisonee listing the works of the artist. Most of the listings of the artist’s works were complied after his death.

From the appraisal above, it is no doubt that “The Crocus Flower” remains of Vincent Van Gogh work. Moreover, Maynard Elliot Inc has give appraised value in current replacement value is Thirty Million US Dollars ($ 30,000,000.00) E. & O. E.
In this site, I also present the appraisal files from Dr. Darragh Elliot. You can see and download if you need it for your recommendation and consideration.

Subject: Question about Van Gogh Painting owned by Rudy MulyonoDear Dr Elliott,I'm Doan Widhiandono, assistant editor in Jawa Pos. We are second largest newspaper in Indonesia, with circulation more than 400,000 copies daily.
Last week I interviewed Mr Rudy Mulyono about his Crocuses painting which he believe that it was Van Gogh's painting.
And since we were very interested on writing a story about it, I would like to intervew you based on the appraisal you gave to Mr Rudy Mulyono.

If you don't mind,I enclose my questions below and you can reply it by email too. But if you feel comfortable if I should call you by phone, that would be no problem too.Dr Elliott, these are my questions:
1. You said 'It appears that this painting could be that of an original work by Vinvent van Gogh'. Is there any spesific sign (technique, brush stroke, signature or canvas texture) which shows that the painting was probably made by Van Gogh?
2. Is it possible that there are still many Van Gogh painting which also undiscovered?Dr Elliott, I think that would be my question. A very short interview indeed. Because I only need a short quotatin from you to make my story more complete.Thank You for your time, and I looking forward to your answer.

Regards,
Doan Widhian

In providing the answers to your questions, they have to be qualified, as I do not authenticate paintings. I only appraise paintings, but in this capacity, I have appraised some very valuable paintings, sculpture and prints by average and major artists, for clients from all over the world. As a result, one of the interesting factors in this business, is that you do not know what you are going to be asked to appraise next, and therefore, my appraisals have not been limited to European art, but as some examples, have been for 5,000 year old sculptures from Cambodia, a three meter tall ivory sculpture of a Chinese warrior, antique Australian Aboriginal artifacts such as 200 year old boomerangs, Canadian Inuit paintings and sculpture to name a few.

I would appreciate it, if you would send me a copy of your newspaper containing your article, for as you know, I am then able to make reference to it in my own curriculum vitae. My address is as follows"

From what I have learned about Mr. Mulyono's painting, is that it was apparently acquired many years ago by his father. Initially, one would wonder how a valuable painting by a major Dutch artist, such as Vincent van Gogh, would be in Indonesia.
But, as Indonesia was a Dutch colony, then this relationship would be indicative or natural for some of the paintings from Holland to make there way to Indonesia. As a result, there is the distinct possibility, that this is one such painting.
Over time or, depending upon their mood, artists will change the style and mannerism of their painting, and will also change how they write their signature. You will note in the appraisal, that I have shown a number of different examples of Vincent van Gogh's signature.

While I am not a hand writing expert, the signature, in my opinion, appears to be the same as that which van Gogh used in signing many of his paintings. One aspect of this, is that the signature is simply "Vincent." This is in keeping with the normal manner in which he signed his paintings, as he did not sign them "Vincent van Gogh."

I made a comparison of this painting to other original paintings by Vincent van Gogh, and within these comparisons, again in my opinion, the style of this painting is similar to the style contained in parts of the other original paintings.
Many artists have the ability to be able to change the style of their painting to the point, that they are so different, that a person being familiar with a certain style pertaining to an artist, can easily be fooled into thinking that the subject painting could never have been painted by the same artist. Therefore, many close comparisons of the artist's other works have to be undertaken.

One of the other unique characteristics of this painting, is that the frame that Mr. Mulyono's painting is in, is either the same or very similar to the frames that were used to frame van Gogh's paintings. Consequently, this adds further credibility to this painting.
The subject of the painting, is in keeping with the subjects of other paintings by van Gogh, as he is well known for painting flowers. Also, the crocus is a flower that grows in Holland.

Therefore, as you can see, there are a great many important factors that would indicate that this could be an original painting by Vincent van Gogh.

If you do a study into Vincent van Gogh, it would indicate that after his death there were hundreds of paintings stashed away in various locations which I believe his wife undertook to obtain. Consequently, it would stand to reason that some o these paintings could have been sold, given or given away as gifts, and as a result, there is a good possibility that there still could be a number of yet undiscovered painting by Vincent van Gogh.

I trust that I have been able to be responsive to your questions, but if I may be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call me.

Best regards,

Dr. J. Darragh M. Elliott
